The Andhra Pradesh Panchayati Raj and Rural Development Department has announced a major relief measure for employees and workers engaged under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). In collaboration with the State Bank of India (SBI), the department has finalized a plan to extend accident insurance coverage ranging from ₹3 lakh to ₹10 lakh for field staff.
Around 8,500 employees working under the MGNREGA scheme will now benefit from the SBI Corporate Salary Package, which includes accident insurance linked to their salary bracket:
This initiative is expected to provide crucial financial security for families in case of accidental death or injury. As part of the rollout, nearly 6,500 staff members’ salary accounts are already being shifted to the new SBI package.
Not just staff, but even the daily wage workers employed under MGNREGA will now be brought under insurance schemes. The state government has linked these workers to central insurance programs such as:
The government has instructed officials to register eligible workers under these insurance programs so that every MGNREGA worker is secured with financial protection.
By extending insurance coverage to both staff and workers, the state government aims to provide a strong safety net for families dependent on MGNREGA employment. In the event of an accident, the schemes will ensure that families are not left without support, fulfilling the government’s commitment to worker welfare.
