Pay Just ₹20 in AP and Get ₹2 Lakh Insurance Coverage - Here's Everything You Need to Know
In a major welfare initiative, the Andhra Pradesh government has announced a new insurance scheme for all MGNREGS (upadhi hami) workers across the state. Under the leadership of Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, the Department of Panchayati Raj and Rural Development has decided to provide accident and health insurance coverage to over 1.2 crore rural labourers working under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS).
The decision follows a tragic road accident in Mogalturu where several MGNREGS workers lost their lives. Since those workers were not covered under any insurance plan, their families were left without financial support. The government, determined to prevent such situations in the future, has taken a proactive step to ensure every MGNREGS worker is insured.
The state will enroll eligible workers under two national-level insurance schemes:
Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY)
Annual Premium: ₹20 only
Coverage: ₹2 lakh in case of accidental death or permanent disability
Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY)
Annual Premium: ₹450
Coverage: Health insurance for various medical treatments and accidents
These schemes aim to provide a safety net for families in case of accidental death, disability, or health emergencies.
Deadline to Submit Applications: May 1
Target to Complete Registration: By June
The Deputy CM has instructed officials to speed up the registration process. District-level teams, especially Field Assistants, are being mobilized to collect applications and facilitate bank-based registration.
Shashi Bhushan Kumar, Principal Secretary of Panchayati Raj and Rural Development
Krishna Teja, Commissioner
DWMA PDs (District Water Management Agency Project Directors) across all districts
Field Assistants and Lead Bank Managers for bank-based coordination
The Commissioner has already held discussions with DWMA officials in all districts to ensure smooth execution.
In the previous government's term, the YSR Bima scheme faced criticism due to poor implementation. Issues included:
Lack of support from bankers
Shortage of ground staff
Delays in application processing
This time, the government aims to overcome such challenges through tighter coordination between departments and districts.
Ensure every eligible MGNREGS worker is insured
Provide financial security to families in case of emergencies
Strengthen the social security net for rural laborers
Build trust and reliability in welfare delivery systems
Rural workers and their families have welcomed the move, expressing happiness that the government is standing by them in times of need. For just ₹20 a year, they now get the assurance of ₹2 lakh in support, making this a truly impactful scheme.
If you are a MGNREGS worker in Andhra Pradesh or know someone who is, encourage them to apply by May 1 to benefit from this life-changing initiative.
