The Indian government is stepping up its efforts to promote clean energy through its latest initiative - the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This new scheme is designed to make solar energy more accessible and affordable for the average household, especially those with limited income.
Under this scheme, eligible families can receive up to 300 units of electricity free every month. The goal is not just to reduce power bills but also to boost the adoption of eco-friendly solar energy across the country.
Launched on February 13, 2024, the scheme aims to support one crore families by helping them install rooftop solar panels. The government has committed an investment of ₹75,000 crore to make this happen.
Households taking part in the scheme will get a subsidy of up to 50% of the cost of solar panels. Once installed, these systems can significantly reduce - or even eliminate - monthly power bills.
Any Indian citizen can apply, provided they meet the following criteria:
No member of the household should hold a government job.
The total family income should be less than ₹8 lakh per year.
Applicants must own a house with a suitable rooftop for installing solar panels.
No one in the family should be a taxpayer.
The subsidy is only granted after the panels are installed.
If you meet the eligibility requirements, here's how you can register:
Visit the official website: https://pmsuryaghar.gov.in
Click on "Apply for Rooftop Solar".
Select your state and electricity distribution company.
Enter your consumer number, mobile number, and email ID.
Log in using your consumer details.
Fill out the application form.
After submitting, you will receive a feasibility approval.
Once approved, you can install the solar system through a registered vendor.
To be eligible for subsidy, keep your last six months' electricity bills handy. Here's how the financial assistance breaks down:
For systems up to 3 kilowatts (kW): ₹30,000 per kW
For systems above 3 kW: ₹18,000 per kW
This means if you install a 3 kW system, you can receive up to ₹90,000 in subsidy.
