Pregnant women across India can receive financial assistance of up to ₹11,000 under the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY), a flagship maternity benefit scheme of the Government of India aimed at improving maternal and child health. The scheme provides partial wage compensation to pregnant and lactating mothers for the first living child and additional benefits in case the second child is a girl.
Launched in 2017 and later updated under PMMVY 2.0, the scheme is implemented by the Ministry of Women and Child Development. Under the current provisions, eligible women receive ₹5,000 for the first child in three installments. The first installment of ₹1,000 is given upon early registration of pregnancy at an Anganwadi Centre or approved health facility. The second installment of ₹2,000 is released after completion of at least one antenatal check-up during six months of pregnancy. The third installment of ₹2,000 is credited after childbirth registration and the first cycle of immunization (BCG, OPV, DPT, and Hepatitis-B) of the child.
In addition to this, under the updated guidelines, a cash incentive of ₹6,000 is provided for the second child if the newborn is a girl, promoting the “Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao” objective of encouraging the birth and protection of girl children. The total financial assistance can thus go up to ₹11,000 depending on eligibility conditions.
The benefit is directly transferred to the beneficiary’s bank account through the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) system, ensuring transparency and avoiding middlemen. Aadhaar linkage is generally required for identification, and the bank account must be in the name of the beneficiary. Women who are employed in government or public sector undertakings or those receiving similar maternity benefits under other laws are not eligible under this scheme.
The scheme primarily targets women aged 19 years and above for the first live birth. Registration is mandatory within the prescribed timeline, and beneficiaries must provide essential documents such as Aadhaar card, bank account details, pregnancy registration records, and child birth certificate details. Applications can be submitted at the nearest Anganwadi Centre, Primary Health Centre (PHC), government hospital, or through ASHA/ANM workers. In many states, applications are also processed through the official PMMVY online portal managed by the Women and Child Development Department.
The objective of the scheme is to provide financial support for wage loss during pregnancy and ensure that pregnant women take adequate rest before and after delivery. It also promotes institutional deliveries, proper antenatal care, and timely vaccination of newborns. Over the years, lakhs of women across the country have benefited from the scheme, making it one of the major maternity assistance programs of the central government.
With rising awareness about maternal health and girl child welfare, the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana continues to play a key role in strengthening India’s public health and social security framework for women and children. Eligible beneficiaries are advised to contact their local Anganwadi centre or health officials for complete guidance on registration and installment release timelines
