The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is all set to roll out a new ₹5 Breakfast Scheme aimed at helping the poor, daily wage earners, and low-income employees. The initiative will be implemented in collaboration with the Hare Krishna Foundation through the existing Indiramma Canteens across the city.
Officials have confirmed that the scheme will be formally inaugurated by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy at the end of this month.
Affordable Meals: Each breakfast actually costs ₹19, but citizens will pay only ₹5, while GHMC will cover the remaining ₹14.
Nutritious Menu: Six varieties of breakfast will be served on different days of the week, including idli, pongal, puri, upma, and more.
Large-Scale Coverage: Arrangements are being made to serve 25,000 people every day.
Expanded Network: The number of Indiramma canteen stalls has been increased from 139 to 150. Old and damaged stalls are being replaced with new, spacious ones at a cost of ₹11.43 crore.
Better Facilities: The newly built canteens are three times bigger than the older stalls, making them more comfortable and efficient.
This scheme is expected to bring major relief to slum dwellers, daily laborers, and small employees by ensuring affordable, hygienic, and nutritious food. It also continues the legacy of the earlier ₹5 Meal Scheme started in 2013, but with an added focus on breakfast.
