The Telangana government has taken a significant step to provide financial support to pregnant women and new mothers. Chief Minister K. Revanth Reddy's administration has decided to implement the Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY), a central government scheme, in the state. Under this program, ₹5,000 will be provided for the first childbirth, and an additional ₹6,000 will be given if the second child is a girl.

Assistance in Three Installments
Eligible pregnant women will receive a total of ₹5,000 in financial aid in three installments:
First installment: ₹1,000 after registration, immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy
Second installment: ₹2,000 after six months of pregnancy
Third installment: ₹2,000 after childbirth, once the child receives the first set of vaccinations
The amounts will be directly credited to the beneficiaries' bank accounts. Additionally, if the second child is a girl, an extra ₹6,000 will be provided in a single installment.
Promoting Girl Child Births
The scheme aims to encourage the birth of girl children and prevent female foeticide. Implementation and monitoring will be carried out by the Women and Child Welfare Department, with Anganwadi workers responsible for identifying eligible women, assisting with registration, and ensuring timely disbursement of funds.
Past Neglect and Unutilized Funds
Although the central government launched PMMVY in 2017, the previous BRS government did not implement it effectively in Telangana, leaving hundreds of crores of funds unutilized. Thousands of pregnant women and new mothers missed out on financial aid.
With the current government taking this initiative, there is optimism that every eligible pregnant woman in the state will benefit from the scheme.
Pregnant women must register with the Anganwadi center in their area.
They need to provide:
Aadhar card
Bank account details
Pregnancy certificate from a registered doctor
Anganwadi workers will verify the eligibility of each applicant.
Confirm that it is the first or second pregnancy, and check for existing children (especially girl children, if relevant for the extra ₹6,000 incentive).
The financial assistance is released in three stages:
First Installment (₹1,000)
After registration, immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy.
Second Installment (₹2,000)
After six months of pregnancy, confirmed via medical check-up records.
Third Installment (₹2,000)
After childbirth, once the child receives first set of vaccinations.
For the second child being a girl, an additional ₹6,000 is released in a single installment.
All funds are directly transferred to the beneficiary's bank account.
The Women and Child Welfare Department monitors progress.
Anganwadi workers report registrations, installments paid, and follow-up checks.
Any discrepancies or pending payments are flagged and addressed by the department.
Conduct awareness campaigns to ensure all eligible women know about the scheme.
Use local health centers, Anganwadi centers, and community meetings.
