West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has launched Phase II of the Banglar Bari (Gramin) Awas Prakalpa, strengthening the state’s effort to provide permanent housing to economically vulnerable rural families. In Nadia district alone, the second phase will cover 84,334 households, mainly targeting homeless families and those living in kutcha houses.
The Banglar Bari scheme is a fully state-funded rural housing initiative, designed as an alternative to centrally sponsored programmes. Through this scheme, the state government aims to ensure secure housing, social dignity and improved living conditions for marginalised sections of society.
Under Phase II, each selected beneficiary will receive financial assistance of ₹1.20 lakh, released in two instalments. The amount will be transferred directly to beneficiaries’ bank or post office accounts, ensuring transparency in fund distribution.
Earlier, Phase I benefited 46,355 families in Nadia district. With the commencement of the second phase, the total number of beneficiaries will increase to 1,30,689, making it one of the largest state-led rural housing drives in the district.
District Magistrate Aneesh Dasgupta stated that families who received homes in the first phase experienced noticeable improvements in safety, health conditions and social stability. Officials noted that permanent housing offers protection from extreme weather, enhances well-being and provides long-term security to rural households.
For the implementation of the scheme in Nadia, the state government has allocated ₹1,568.26 crore, funded entirely from its own resources. Additional District Magistrate Anup Dutta confirmed that housing remains a top development priority for the state.
The programme is being implemented across all 18 blocks of Nadia district. Blocks such as Nakashipara, Ranaghat-II, Kaliganj, Haringhata and Krishnagar-I have recorded a high number of beneficiaries. Nakashipara leads in beneficiary coverage under Phase II, followed by Chapra and Kaliganj.
Officials added that beneficiary selection was carried out after thorough field verification, with special focus on households that were excluded from previous housing schemes.
With Phase II underway, Banglar Bari (Gramin) Awas Prakalpa continues to play a crucial role in West Bengal’s welfare framework, translating policy commitments into concrete benefits for rural families in need.
